Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi), Rho Chapter
AKPsi is the oldest business-focused organization at the University of Washington and the Foster School of Business, with a rich history around the Pacific Northwest. It aims to provide resources for enhancing the educational experiences of future business leaders.
I rushed Alpha Kappa Psi in Autumn, 2013. During the pledge process, I served as the fundraising chair and led a team of 5 to raise $1000 in 8 weeks. I was also a member of the Professional Development team and designed and facilitated multiple events, such as Northwest Mutual case competition, guests speeches, etc. In the Autumn Quarter of 2014, I served as a consultant for Rho Consulting and 8 of us worked with a Non-Profit Organization in Seattle- Legal Voice to identify the current marketing problems within the institution and found out the solutions. Moreover, during my active participating through various events such as Regional conference, Relay For Life, etc., I absorbed a totally different way of thinking and seeing the issues through the lens of businesses and I have learned a lot of great ideas and perspectives from my peers.

Learning and Reasoning:
Systems Thinking
- Making connections between individual parts in a system to anticipate how the relationships between these individual effect with each other and the system as a whole. In the other words, to understand how a variety of factors and elements interact with each other as part of a process and how can personal contribution and its effect on other persons and the whole organization.
- As the prestigious Fraternity on campus, the words and deeds we as members say and do will leave a either positive or negative impact on other people's opinions towards the name of Alpha Kappa Psi. We are representing the value and mission of the Fraternity. When the committee organizes any event, I will first think about the questions such as "will this event impose a good name for AKPsi?", "Is it worth to take the risk for the name of AKPsi?". Through systems thinking, I am able to anticipate the relationship between my responsibility and the AKPsi as a whole, because any of the actions I make are crucial for the organization.
Learning and Reasoning:
Idea Generation
- Creating ideas by expanding one's thinking beyond the convention to best address the issue. It is a creative process of constructing idea, innovating the concepts, and bring this idea to the reality.
- During the pledge process, the chapter set a goal of a certain amount of money to achieve in order to demonstrate our fundraising and leadership ability. As the fundraising chair, I led my committee members to brainstorm various ideas to generate funds. One of the ideas was to take professional head shots for students at the University. The idea was executed successfully and we had more than 100 people get their photo taken. This was a great idea that was different than the rest of the ideas that the previous pledge classes had. In the constant changing world, idea generation is essential in order to find the best ideas to reach the solution and achieve the goal.
Self-awareness and Development:
Self-developing
- It is about the learning and to be able to achieve one's full potential.
- As I've wrote in the introduction section, as a non-business member in the Fraternity, by interacting with a lot of the business students and organizing events through Foster School of Business, I've been exposed to and absorbed several different perspective and ways of thinking and acting. Particularly, I've learned the importance of professionalism, networking, leadership, and efficiency in the real world business setting. All in all, I've grown enormously in the chapter.
