I believe that being a Global Citizen means to learn certain cultural studies, language studies and just through traveling. Global Citizenship should link to all kinds of aspects of the society such as political, economic, religious, artistic, indigenous peoples, minority groups, etc. However, it is not easy to expose oneself and absorb all kinds of elements in a short time. There is definitely a long way for me to go. It is a process that takes a lot of learning and applying the knowledge into a real world setting.
Citizen University 2015
Citizen University works with a national array of partners to help residents cultivate the values, systems knowledge, and skills of effective citizenship. I attended this two day conference on March 18-19, 2015 and I was astonished by how valuable the citizen right is and what we can do as individuals to fight for what we want and believe. After this conference, I became actively involved with different environmental clubs on campus to seek opportunities to contribute my own power and civil responsibility to make a change.
COM 433- Indigenous Peoples Film and Sovereignty & ENVIR 480 Environmental Studio
Before taking these classes, I had no knowledge about Indigenous peoples' situations and stories in the States. However, in order to fully understand a country's history, I really need to trace the earliest age and take a deeper look of how these events or people shaped the society. These classes drive me to think deeply of the roots of the a culture's history when I travel- not by floating on the surface, but really understanding and experiencing the whole history from the very beginning to the current and future.
JSIS C 202- World Religions
Religion system is a complicated yet ignored factor when traveling, or considering all different issues around the world. It influences how people talk and behave, and it can answer a lot of unanswered questions, especially in countries that have long religious histories. This course has really broadened my understanding and inspired me to always think about the context of religious when I talk and interact with people, or travel to any part of the world.
COM 321- Political Communication
This is the course I took when I studied abroad in Brussels, Belgium. The unique part of this class is that this class was coming from a very different angle of global issues. We talked about many Middle East problems and conflicts, and how the media shaped the reality and sometimes changed the whole meaning of the conflict. While in the States, we seldom discuss about these Middle East country issues, especially in Communication classes. I believe partly is because geographically, Europe is near the Middle East countries, and they are serving as world leader to try to solve the problems. This course reminded me the importance of your "position" in the world and how it shapes your priority and direction.
